Mesirow taps ex-Schroders veteran

The Chicago-based fund of funds has hired Michael Clarke as head of its European real estate operations, following 18 years at Schroders.

Mesirow Financial has hired former Schroders Property Investment Management executive Michael Clarke to lead its European activities.

The fund of funds group said it had appointed Clarke as senior managing director and head of real estate in Europe. Clarke will be based in London.

The property veteran, who resigned as head of property product at Schroders in May and set up his own advisory company this summer, spent 18 years at the London-based firm and was responsible for helping grow the firm’s assets under management from £160 million (€187 million; $255.5 million) to £7.5 billion. He also led the launch of eight indirect real estate funds and three fund-of-fund vehicles, Mesirow said in a statement.

Notably, Clarke set up the firm’s global fund of funds business, recruiting Jenny Buck in 2001 to run it. In August, Buck also resigned from Schroders reportedly frustrated by senior colleagues’ resistance to plans to expand the business.

Mesirow senior managing director Josh Daitch said in the statement Clarke’s hire would deepen the firm’s presence in the region. Consultant Courtland Partners currently advises with international fund investments scrutinized with the help of consultant
