Marathon appoints former JP Morgan exec as managing director

The global asset manager has appointed former JP Morgan Chase global treasurer Mark Kleinman as a senior managing director in a bid to expand the firm.

New York-based hedge fund Marathon Asset Management has named former JP Morgan Chase global treasurer as a senior managing director at the firm where he will help in its strategic development.

In his former post, Kleinman was responsible for global funding, liquidity, capital, new product development, infrastructure, clearing, settlement, and regulatory and rating agency relationships. Prior to that he was managing director and treasurer of the global corporate and investment bank at Citigroup. Kleinman also spent 16 years at Goldman Sachs working in investment banking, fixed income, treasury and strategic planning.

Bruce Richards, Marathon president and chief executive officer said in a statement that Kleinman’s background and experience makes him an “important contributor to the ongoing growth of the firm.”

The global asset manager recently opened an office in Istanbul to target private equity and real estate opportunities in Turkey and the surrounding region, headed by Mehmet Budak, a former employee of Carlyle. Marathon’s dedicated real estate team is co-headed by Jon Halpern and Ron Bernstein.

In a recent interview with PERE magazine, Halpern revealed the firm had just opened an office in Mumbai where it had become equity partner to Indian development companies. “We have the same investment profile as private equity, but the difference is that we have the advantage of evergreen capital,” he said. “We don't have the same pressure to invest in any sector or geography and that has given us flexibility to be a bit more responsive.”

Founded in 1998, Marathon Asset Management currently has $11.7 billion (€7.4 billion) in capital under management.
