Hamilton Lane bolsters real estate platform

The private equity advisory and fund of funds firm has hired Jerome Gates to lead and expand its offering in the real estate sector.

Hamilton Lane, a Philadelphia-based firm that provides discretionary and non-discretionary private equity asset management services to sophisticated investors, is expanding its offering in the real estate sector with the addition of industry veteran Jerome Gates as managing director to lead the product area.

Gates, who joins the firm with more than 20 years of experience in real estate portfolio management and investment banking, will be responsible for helping Hamilton Lane bring its clients additional high-value opportunities in the real estate market. That includes identifying the best managers with a strong track record in real estate, constructing selective and customized investment portfolios, establishing joint ventures with operators targeting unique opportunities and managing high-end reporting and monitoring.

“We look forward to working with Jerry to help us grow our existing real estate offering,” said Mario Giannini, chief executive officer of Hamilton Lane. “He has a long and successful history of building investment management businesses in this sector, and our global platform will give Jerry and our team access to the best opportunities for our clients.”

Before joining Hamilton Lane, Gates most recently worked at Morgan Stanley Smith Barney, where he was a managing director in alternative investments and head of global real estate investments, delivering commercial real estate products to institutional and high-net-worth clients. He also worked at Citigroup for more than 30 years, most recently as managing director of global wealth management and head of its global real estate investments business. In the last five years at Citigroup, he raised more than $1 billion in client capital for investment strategies that predominantly were focused on emerging markets.
