PEI’s Research and Analytics team has published its LP 50 ranking which revealed the 50 investors that committed and invested the most capital into private equity between 1 March 2010 and 28 February 2015.

In 2015, the top ten institutional investors made investments to private equity – including primary funds – totalling $160.16 billion, a 20 percent increase on the amount committed by the top ten LPs in the 2014 LP 50. In total, $133.58 billion was invested in funds and direct investments between 1 March 2009 and 28 February 2014.

The Canada Pension Plan Investment Board topped the list in 2015 with $28.09 billion of capital committed over the time period. Apollo Investment Fund VIII was the largest mandate confirmed by the pension fund – an investment of just under $1 billion was made to the North American-focused buyout vehicle in June 2013. CPPIB also topped the ranking in 2014, with an aggregate amount invested and committed of $26.21 billion.

AlpInvest Partners and Hamilton Lane came in second and third place this year, investing $19.68 billion and $17.8 billion respectively. Both fund of funds managers committed and invested more capital than in last year’s ranking but retained their positions in the LP 50.
