Carlyle brings in North African specialist for MENA push

The Carlyle Group has recruited North African specialist Hassan El-Khatib as a managing director to bolster its newly formed MENA team in Cairo.

The Carlyle Group has hired Hassan El-Khatib as a managing director, as it looks to expand its offering in North Africa.

El-Khatib was previously a managing partner with EFG-Hermes Private Equity, a Middle Eastern investment bank with operations in Egypt, where he raised several funds targeting Egypt, Jordan and Turkey. He was previously a partner at Commercial International Investment Company (CIIC), an Egyptian private equity firm.

El-Khatib will be based in Cairo and advise on possible Carlyle investments in Egypt, Algeria, Morocco, Libya and Tunisia.

Walid Musallam, a Carlyle managing director and head of the MENA team, said El-Khatib was “a proven investor with a breadth of experience”. This would help the team establish themselves quickly in the region, he said.

Carlyle’s MENA team, which was formed in November last year and has offices in Cairo, Dubai and Istanbul, is targeting various sectors including energy, financial services, healthcare, industrial, infrastructure, technology and transportation.
