Allianz makes key hire for southern Europe

Ex Morgan Stanley professional joins the German group and will operate from the company’s Italy hub.

Allianz Real Este, the real estate investment arm of German insurer Allianz with €21 billion of assets under management, has made a significant hire to drive its business in southern Europe.

Former Morgan Stanley professional, Mauro Montagner, has joined as chief executive officer heading the southern European platform and will be based at the company’s Italian hub in Milan.

Montagner will mainly focus on ‘screening’ the market in southern Europe for direct, indirect and debt investments and managing the firm’s existing portfolio. He also becomes a member of the executive committee of Allianz Real Estate.

“The market in southern Europe especially in Italy is very interesting for us”, said Olivier Piani, CEO of Allianz Real Estate. “The economic situation at the moment is not yet overcome but offers as well many opportunities – also in Southern Europe – which we would like to embrace. The appointment of Mauro Montagner as CEO of our Italian hub is an important step in expanding our real estate portfolio further.”

Montagner has spent 7 years at Morgan Stanley’s real estate investing team in Italy and prior to that he held a position at Ric Lewis’ Curzon Global Partners and AEW Europe.
