Allianz makes another senior hire for global platform

Matthew Ryall is joining the German insurer to head up its multi-fund strategy. The appointment comes one week after Allianz unveiled Olivier Piani as its head of real estate.

Allianz has hired former BlackRock executive Matthew Ryall as group head of fund selection in Europe and taken on Victoria Walbröhl, previously with Union Investment Real Estate, as head of portfolio management.

Ryall worked for BlackRock in London until the middle of May having joined the firm as director in the US group’s real estate team. Walbröhl was most recently head of portfolio strategy at Union Investment in Germany. She will be working with Joe Valente, who joined Allianz at the start of the month as head of the portfolio management and strategy having previously worked for DTZ.

The appointments were revealed by Allianz just one week after it announced Olivier Piani would take over as head of real estate. Piani is leaving GE Real Estate as its chief executive of European real estate to take up the new role at Allianz in October.

Allianz is a German insurer which has €20 billion ($31 billion) of real estate under management. It is creating a global property investment platform under subsidiary, Allianz Alternative Assets.
