Allianz hires Donner as US real estate head

Former Aareal, Hypo Real Estate and Deutsche Bank executive Christoph Donner is to assume the role more than six months after it was vacated by James Stolpestad.

Allianz Real Estate, the real estate investment arm of German insurer Allianz, has appointed Christoph Donner as its chief executive officer for America.

Donner joins from Aareal Capital Corporation where he was chief credit officer based in New York. Prior to that, he worked for Hypo Real Estate, the German lender, based in Frankfurt. He has also worked for Deutsche Bank, the investment bank.

His experience revolves around investing in and lending to real estate deals from the US, the UK and Germany.

He replaces James Stolpestad, who departed in December last year after more than three years in the role. Donner relieves Eric Bergwall, Allianz Real Estate’s head of portfolio management, who took on the role on an interim basis.

Of the new hire, Olivier Piani, the chief executive officer of Allianz Real Estate said: “[Christoph] Donner brings significant experience and expertise in commercial real estate lending, development and investment.”

Allianz Real Estate invests in real estate on behalf of Allianz companies on both a direct and indirect basis. It operates from Germany, France, Switzerland, Italy, the US and Asia Pacific. As at the end of last year, the firm had approximately €30 billion of assets under management.
