AEW Europe appoints head of private equity funds

Russell Jewell, former Merrill Lynch Global Principal Investments head of Europe, has joined AEW. Chief investment officer, Rob Wilkinson, said the firm looked forward to building its private equity platform ‘as market appetite for value-add and opportunistic products increases’.

AEW Europe has appointed former Merrill Lynch Global Principal Investments European chief, Russell Jewell, as head of private equity funds.

The Paris-based firm, which is part of a global platform with €30 billion of assets, has charged Jewell with managing and developing the firm’s private equity real estate funds, it said.

Rob Wilkinson, chief investment officer of AEW Europe, added Jewell would help continue to build its platform “as market appetite for value-add and opportunistic products increases”.

Jewell has been operating in real estate for 25 years, investing in more than €5 billion of transactions in that time, according to a statement.

He began his career in 1985 with Debenham Tewson & Chinnocks in the UK investment market. From 1988 until 1994 he helped develop the European platforms of Jones Lang LaSalle and Healey & Baker in Spain. Next he joined Pacific Investments as a fund manager working on a range of pan-European portfolios before joining Merrill Lynch in 1997 where he became head of Europe for the bank’s Global Principal Investments business. Finally, in 2006 he joined Strategic Value Partners, a global alternative investment firm, as managing director, Europe.

Jewell said in the current market environment, strong infrastructure, credible track record and the availability of co-investment capital were key to fund raising and successful investing.
