Starwood Capital Group is developing a $200 million (€128 million) environmentally-friendly condo-hotel at the Wyndansea Oceanfront Golf Resort, in Vancouver Island, British Columbia.
The hotel will be part of Starwood’s 1 Hotel brand, the brainchild of founder Barry Sternlicht, who is credited with developing the W Hotel and St. Regis Hotel brands. The project, to be developed in conjunction with Wyndansea resort developers Marine Drive Properties, is being developed to LEED certification.
The resort, on the Ucluelet Peninsula, adjacent to the Pacific Rim National Park, was set to open next year, according to press reports, but is now slated for completion in 2011. The complex includes an 18-hole course designed by championship golfer Jack Nicklaus as well as a deepwater marina.
The 1 Hotel is expected to comprise 180 hotel-condominium suites and 95 beach and golf villas. It will also have an eco-conscious spa, fitness facility and salt water pools. The hotel is expected to use renewable energy systems such as seawater geo-thermal exchange, tidal power and photo-voltaic energy. The 1 Hotel brand was launched in 2006 in a bid to show that green principles could “coexist” with luxury hospitality projects, according to the firm.
Sternlicht, who founded Starwood in 1991, said the 370-acre Wyndansea development was part of the firm’s efforts to conserve the environment for future generations: “As I watch my children grow up and become responsible citizens, I have become more cognizant of what we are leaving behind and the personal responsibility we all share to help preserve and protect our environment. It is the perfect time for 1 and Wyndansea is the perfect place.”
