PERE AWARDS: Go with who they know

The results of the 2013 Global PERE Awards are in, and larger, better-known players once again dominated

A different year and different deals but similar voting results. If last year’s Global PERE Awards confirmed a shift to larger, better-known players, this year’s results solidified that stance among voters, who flocked to marquee names. Indeed, The Blackstone Group, BlackRock and Kohlberg Kravis Roberts each won multiple awards, while industry stalwarts like The Carlyle Group, Starwood Capital Group and Lone Star Funds also garnered recognition.

For 2013, Blackstone won six Global PERE Awards – up from four awards last year and the most by any firm. The New York-based private equity and real estate titan grabbed Global Firm of the Year honors for its numerous big-ticket acquisitions around the world, as well as its success in raising capital for Europe-, Asia- and debt-focused funds. With regards to fundraising, the firm also won Europe Capital Raise of the Year for its Blackstone Real Estate Partners Europe IV fund, which raised €4 billion last year and smashed its own record for the largest Europe-focused fund ever raised.

On the deal side, Blackstone was recognized for both Deal of the Year and Exit of the Year in North America and Europe. In the Americas, the firm was honored for its $2.4 billion multifamily purchase from GE Capital and its IPO of Brixmor, its retail property platform. Meanwhile, in Europe, it received recognition for its takeover of Multi Corporation and its £1.7 billion sale of a 50 percent stake in London’s Broadgate office complex, the largest single-asset transaction in UK history.

In Asia, the big story was Gaw Capital Partners and its leader, Goodwin Gaw. The Hong Kong-based firm hit its $1 billion hard cap for its latest fund, while its leader advised Asian institutional investors on several cross-continent transactions.

Newer players, however, weren’t completely shut out, managing to snag an award here and there. The most notable was Actis, which landed the Africa/ Middle East Firm of the Year award on the strength of several high-profile projects being developed on behalf of its second fund.

These are just a few of the highlights of this year’s results, which are available to view online now. For complete results of the 2013 Global PERE Awards, along with brief profiles on all the winning firms and individuals, click here.
