ESR hires co-head for India industrial – Exclusive

The Asia-focused logistics real estate operator has made its first external hire for its newly-launched operations in India.

e-Shang Redwood (ESR) has appointed Abhijit Malkani as co-head of its India operations, as the Asia-focused logistics operator firms up its foray into the country.

PERE has learned that Malkani will officially start his new role on August 1. He joins from Indospace, the industrial and logistics real estate development platform of the Everstone Group, where he was responsible for leasing and business development.

Malkani joined Indospace in 2009. He has two decades of industry experience and has previously also worked with ProLogis India and NAI Asia Pacific.

He will be heading the leadership function along with Jai Mirpuri, who was earlier ESR’s Singapore-based managing director for investments.

ESR has already set up an office in Mumbai and is in the process of hiring an analyst to join the newly-launched operations. The firm has not made any logistics investment in the country so far.

PERE had first reported ESR’s move into India in March this year. This will be ESR’s maiden regional expansion attempt – the firm has until now concentrated its investments in China, Japan and Korea.

For the Redwood Group however, which merged with e-Shang to create ESR in January last year, this will be its second attempt at cracking the Indian real estate market. Redwood had opened an office in Mumbai in 2007 and Mirpuri was appointed as an associate director for global special projects. The firm also announced a joint venture partnership with DHFL Venture Capital during the time.
