In the PERE Investor Sentiment Survey, PERE Research & Analytics asked investors on their preferred investment strategies for indirect real estate in 2014. Value-added strategies were most popular, with almost half of respondents leaning towards this investment type. From our talks with LPs, one portfolio manager emphasized that value added and opportunistic funds tended to be more popular as they provided the higher returns preferred by pension funds and endowments.

Fund of funds proved to be least popular, with only 6% of investors showing preference for the strategy. Just in November, the Carlyle Group entered this space, acquiring Metropolitan Real Estate Equity Management, a real estate fund of funds firm.
